Sam Jackson - Guitar, Vocals, Keys, Bass

Having heard the music of Rufus & Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell in the womb, Sam grew up listening to everything from Elvis and The Beatles, to folk, rock, jazz, blues, soul, classical (ok not that much), and reggae. Growing up in the 80s hearing the pop music of Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince, friends who were digging REM, U2 and Neil Young taught him 2-3 chords on the acoustic guitar at high school.

Someone slipped him a James Brown tape at a house party as a teenager, and when something similar happened with a vinyl copy of Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain LP at college, he never looked back. A self-taught player who came up through London’s open mic scene, in his former musical lives Sam made the final of South London’s star search and the national semi-final of the UKs Live and Unsigned. Demo recording ‘Pieces of a Dream’ was subsequently played on both BBC Radio Kent and on Jazz FM.

Sam not only plays music but writes about it, and you can read some his recent musings at the Cocoa Diaries website. His philosophy and approach to music can be summed up, by musical hero George Clinton, in one simple phrase – “the funk is its own reward”.
